So apparently I have become the impro guy. Fair enough, my work with the RIO group, the 4 year activity with the Helsinki Meeting Point, even my cv says improvisation/instant composition is my main interest. Most of the work I have done as an independent artist, as opposed to what I have done for other choreographers, has come out as somehow “improvised” or improvisation based.
And yet, improvisation is increasingly become inadequate to describe what I do, partly because of how loaded the word has become.
So here is one of my tasks for the next few months: find out the right words, the right way to describe what I do in an articulate way. The first step seems to point in the direction of redefining the models and altogether getting rid of the dichotomy between choreography and improvisation.
